3 Church Street

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Look what we found in the basement:

It’s a breakfast menu from the days when this house was known simply as Three Church Street:

At that time, the inn was owned by Ms. Eleanor Paine.  Though we never got a chance to meet her, we’ve heard that she was a remarkable woman who lived her life and ran her inn with great verve and elan.  I’ll bet she made a mean pancake.

I love the rich history of this house, and I hope that we live up to the tradition of gracious conviviality established by Ms. Paine.  Eleanor, we’ll try to do you proud.

And we’ll tend to the peonies.

Neighborly

When you’re new to a small town and you live in an old house, you’ll be surprised by how many kind folks help you reconstruct your home’s history.  For example, a mysterious fellow recently dropped off this hand-tinted postcard of 3 Church Street, back when it belonged to one Judge Sanders:

Cool, no? He’d found it in an antique shop and wanted us to have it. Thanks for being neighborly, mystery man.
